Kerr Window

The Green W. Kerr and Maria Kerr Window

author:  Margaret Hughston

One of the windows in the south wall was given in memory of Major Green William Kerr and his wife, Maria Henderson Kerr.  It was given to the church by their children, one of whom, John, was a charter member.  The window is one of many colors with shades of mauve and green predominating.

Major Green William Kerr was an early member and an elder in this church.  He had come to Collin County from Tennessee in 1858 and purchased 590 acres of land in the Vineland Community northwest of McKinney.  In 1859, he brought his family and household goods in a hack and wagons.

Major Kerr and his wife were the parents of nine children.  One son, Jerome, was killed in the Battle of Shiloh.  Their daughter, Ruth, was the first wife of Captain Jonathan S. Dowell.  Their daughter, Elizabeth, who married J. H. B. Hockaday, was the mother of Miss Ela Hockaday, who established Hockaday School, a notable school for girls in Dallas.
